National Assembly Deputy Speaker Prof. Dr Vladimir Marinkovic Meets with Representatives of PETA Germany and Freedom for Animals Belgrade

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Prof. Dr Vladimir Marinkovic met today with representatives of PETA Germany and Freedom for Animals Belgrade to discuss fur farming.

The visiting delegation briefed Deputy Speaker Marinkovic on the relevant experiences from European countries and countries in the region with a special focus on the inexpediency of extending the deadlines for the ban on fur farming.

Deputy Speaker Marinkovic opined that this is an essential environmental issue and suggested that the representatives of the two associations talk to the National Assembly’s Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Committee and Environmental Protection Committee. He said that the issue merits a serious fact, experience and research-based discussion.

The host and visitors agreed that it would be good to conduct a public opinion poll and then talk to all the stakeholders and find the best solution for Serbia.

Nicole van Gemert, former Dutch MP who took active part in defending the legislation against fur farming, presented the experiences from the Netherlands where fur farming is expected to be completely eliminated by 2024, as well as the experiences from Hungary and Poland where no such ban is in operation. She said that there are indications that the farms would relocate to countries that have no ban on fur farming which will have a negative impact on animals at large, wild animals, pollution and climate change.

Luka Oman, president of the Animal Friends Association from Croatia, who is also special advisor to the Croatian ministry of agriculture and environmental protection, said that with 73% of Croatians against fur farming the country passed the ban in 2006, a 10-year deadline for complete implementation. He said this deadline turned out to be too long because there are always people who will work against the law and the common good for their own material gain. He opined that Serbia is moving in the right direction, adding that it should consider the environmental and ethical impact of the extension of the deadline.

Majda Shabeta of PETA Germany presented the data on the region and the EU countries where fur farming is legal and all the negative impact on the common good - pollution, dangers to biodiversity, domesticated animals and people, using the example of chinchilla farming. She said that Poland is a prime example of why it foreign farms should be prevented from relocating into the region because the cost to the citizens and the state outstrips the meagre profit.

Jelena Stevanovic of Freedom for Animals Belgrade shared the data at the association’s disposal, saying that the treatment of animal waste is a huge problem, as well as the chemicals used to treat the fur.
