Members of PFG with China Meet with Chairman of Chinese National People's Congress Standing Committee

The members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with China headed by Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic met today with the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of the People’s Republic of China Zhang Dejiang in the course of his three-day visit to Serbia.

The officials agreed that the three-day visit to Serbia was a success and would greatly contribute to furthering cooperation between Serbia and China. They emphasized the importance of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the two parliaments signed by National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic and the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress Zhang Dejiang, which provides a solid foundation to the further development of interparliamentary cooperation.

Chairman Zhang stressed that, despite being geographically distant, Serbia and China share a historically close bond. Serbia is China’s first comprehensive strategic partner in the region which is proof of the special friendship between the two countries, said Zhang stressing that economic cooperation is expanding and cultural cooperation is also very intensive. The Chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress Standing Committee pointed out the complexity of the international political and economic situation stressing how important it is to strengthen Serbia and China’s strategic partnership under the circumstances. He said that the multilateral Belt and Road initiative offers an excellent platform for cooperation, as does the “16+1” cooperation process between China and central and eastern European countries.

The Head of the PFG with China Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic said that this Parliamentary Friendship Group is one of the biggest in the National Assembly and is composed of members of different political parties united in the belief that Serbia and China should have extensive interparliamentary cooperation, as well as cooperation in other spheres. The fact that Serbia is the first country where Chinese companies had built a bridge, completed the reconstruction and built new sections to Kostolac Thermal Power Plant and bough a steel works plant is proof of the two countries’ friendly relations, said Obradovic adding that the recent visa abolition also encourages economic cooperation and tourism. He said that the intensive educational, cultural and scientific cooperation is crucial for the understanding between the two nations and urged to develop it further.

MPs Veroljub Arsic, Aleksandra Djurovic, Miljan Damjanovic, Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic, Srdjan Nogo, Dragomir Karic and Milan Lapcevic also spoke at the meeting and agreed that intensive bilateral cooperation between Serbia and China is essential. They stressed that the two countries share a deep political trust and thanked China for its support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
