Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Member and Chairman Visit Newly-Opened Pride Info Centre

Meho Omerovic, Chairman of Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, and Committee Deputy Chairperson Maja Videnovic visited the newly-opened Pride Info Centre on 8 September 2017.

The Pride Info Centre is the first public space in the city centre where the citizens can gain information on Belgrade Pride and the activities of LGBT organizations on a daily basis. The opening of the Pride Info Centre is a historic step for the LGBT community which remains mainly invisible in Serbia. The Pride Info Centre’s activities aim to raise social awareness on LGBT problems and on Belgrade Pride as the single most important public event aimed at promoting the human rights of the social group.

On the occasion the MPs spoke with the members of the LGBT community and offered their support. Meho Omerovic announced a joint session of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality and the European Integration Committee on 14 September 2017 at the National Assembly House scheduled to review the state-of-play of LGBT rights protection. The report on “Being LGBTI in Serbia” prepared by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Serbia will be presented at the sitting.

One proposal was to have the Committee organize a sitting in the interior to discuss the problems of the LGBT population in smaller communities in Serbia.
