Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman Denounces New Instance of Violence against Women

I commend the swift reaction of the police and court in the most recent reported instance of violence against women perpetrated against Natasa Bekvalac, who issued an emergency restraining order i.e. extended the restraining order. I hope that the authorities will carry out the law in very much the same manner in other cases of domestic violence and that all victims will be treated equally be they a homemaker, head of a company, member of parliament or a recording artist, or the perpetrator a football player, actor or politician.

The media should also provide support to the state and its institutions in raising awareness and preventing domestic violence. Unfortunately despite the many campaigns against domestic violence most media again fell prey to sensationalist reporting. Though the case concerns a celebrity, Mrs Bekvalac has the right to protection of privacy and basic human rights. Though the details of the investigation in this case are made public, which additionally humiliates the victim, on the other hand when the victims are not as well-known the same media are very curt in their reporting, usually publishing a brief report containing just the victim’s initials. The media should have reported this event in another manner as well, in line with journalist ethics and standards, as well as the dignity and equal treatment of every victim.
