Foreign Affairs Committee Deputy Chairperson Dubravka Filipovski at Conference “Stability in the Western Balkans – Perspectives of the European Integration Process”

On 13 December, Budapest hosted a conference entitled “Stability in the Western Balkans – Perspectives of the European Integration Process” within the meeting of the foreign affairs committees of Visegrad Group - V4.

The conference was organized by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Hungary as the chair of the Visegrad Group. The representatives of the foreign affairs committees from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary all strongly endorsed the EU enlargement policy, emphasizing Serbia and Montenegro’s integration prospects.

The National Assembly Foreign Affairs Committee was represented by Deputy Chairperson Dubravka Filipovski who thanked the members of the Visegrad Group for their support of the Western Balkans’ European integration process, active promotion of the EU enlargement strategy and establishment of the Western Balkans Fund within the Visegrad Group. Dubravka Filipovski said that the first half of 2018 would be very important for Serbia and the other countries in the region since the EU integration of the Western Balkans would be a priority of Bulgaria’s presidency of the EU Council, and the European Commission would be publishing a document on the enlargement strategy and the annual progress report.

“The reforms in Serbia are the key to success while the European path is part of the national development policy and a way to fulfil the promises given to the citizens”, said Filipovski. She stressed that the proposed membership deadlines should be viewed as a positive signal to the candidate countries and a renewal of the consensus in the Union on the accession of the Balkans.

She warned that the region is in real danger of being dragged into geopolitical games and the manipulation of historical disputes could lead to new conflicts. It is the responsibility of the leaders of the region to keep peace and stability which are essential for democratic development. The leadership of the Republic of Serbia headed by Aleksandar Vucic acts according to this, Filipovski concluded. She emphasized that Serbia’s dedication to regional cooperation and working together to build a region of peace, security and economic prosperity and to resolve any outstanding issues is not declarative, but real and based on the awareness of its necessity and usefulness.
