Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman and Members Meet with Former Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Katrougalos

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic and Committee members Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic and Ljiljana Malusic met today at the National Assembly with Former Greek Foreign Minister and current MP Giorgos Katrougalos to discuss the cooperation and importance of mutual understanding between Balkan states and people.

Zarko Obradovic spoke about the historic friendship between Serbia and Greece and thanked the Greek people for their support and friendship in difficult times. Serbia is also grateful for the Greek support in its European integration process and principled stance of non-recognition of the independence of the so-called state of Kosovo. Obradovic said that the two countries’ parliaments enjoy excellent cooperation which could be furthered through more intensive relations between the committees in charge of foreign affairs.

Speaking of Serbia’s European integration process, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee said that the issue of Kosovo-Metohija is the biggest challenge there. Serbia is committed to dialogue and finding a compromise solution, said Obradovic but Pristina is blocking the dialogue having imposed a 100% customs tariff on goods from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina more than a year ago without an adequate response from the international community. The Brussels Agreement was signed in 2013, with the EU itself as guarantor, and Pristina has still not fulfilled its most important obligation – formed a Community of Serb municipalities, Zarko Obradovic concluded.

Giorgos Katrougalos stressed that it is important that the conflicts between the countries in the region be resolved peacefully through dialogue, mentioning the Prespa Agreement between Greece and North Macedonia as a good example. He added that Greece supports the EU accession of the Balkan states, a process launched in Thessaloniki in 2003.

The officials agreed that Serbia and Greece should continue their good cooperation and mutual support both at the bilateral level and in multilateral formats and international organizations, especially in the Council of Europe.

The meeting was also attended by the Director of the Institute of European Studies Misa Djurkovic.
