Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Meets with Head of European External Action Service Division South-East Europe/Western Balkans

The Chairman of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee Borko Stefanovic met today in the National Assembly with the Head of the European External Action Service Division South-East Europe/Western Balkans Elsa Fenet to discuss the political situation in Serbia and country’s European integration process.

Borko Stefanovic thanked the European Union and its officials for all the sincere messages of condolences and understanding for the recent tragic events in Serbia. He stressed that it is now up to the political actors to, despite their ideological differences, do everything they can to find a way out of the problems that have led to these immense social tragedies. Stefanovic listed illegal possession of weapons, as well as the bad influence of the media on young people through inappropriate content in reality programs and shows that provide them with bad role models as significant causes of these events, stressing that this area requires strict regulation. He opined that the government is responsible for the situation in the media and the atmosphere of hatred in the society, and that it must held accountable for it.

Discussing Serbia's European integration, the officials agreed that, speaking of the war in Ukraine, it is extremely important for Serbia to align its foreign policy with the European, because that would show what line Serbia is on. Fenet expressed her expectation that this would happen in the coming period, thanking Stefanovic for proposing the Resolution on the alignment of Serbia’s foreign policy with the foreign policy of the European Union in the form of restrictive measures towards the Russian Federation, despite the fact that the Foreign Affairs Committee did not adopt it.

In these specific circumstances in Europe, enlargement has once again become an important topic for the EU, said Elsa Fenet, adding that this is a good signal for the Western Balkans, however, it is necessary to hear from the countries of this region that European integration is a process that they want to continue.

Stefanovic said that the latest Report on Serbia's progress is encouraging, adding that the EU itself should reinforce these positive messages and incentives. One of the concrete measures to that end would be to provide the opportunity for EU candidate countries to elect their representatives into the European Parliament, without the right to vote, but with the opportunity to speak, he said.
