Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Meets with Chairperson of Italian Parliament’s Chamber of Deputies Committee on Foreign and European Affairs

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic met today with the Chairperson of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs of the Italian Parliament’s Chamber of Deputies Marta Grande to discuss the bilateral relations between Serbia and Italy in the country’s European integration process.

Obradovic stressed that Serbia is determined to become a member of the European Union. One of the biggest problems, he said, is the Kosovo-Metohija issue, which is the focus of one negotiation chapter, as well as the EU’s internal reform which will additionally slow down the EU enlargement process. Pristina does not want to continue the dialogue with Belgrade nor is it implementing the obligations it assumed under the Brussels Agreement, primarily the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities, and has a year ago instated customs taxes on goods from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina which violate the regional trade agreement. He restated that Serbia wants to continue the dialogue, reminding the guest that in the last two years 17 countries retracted their recognition of Kosovo, and that Serbia wants to come to a solution to the problem through dialogue.

Speaking of the relations between Serbia and Italy the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee said that they are excellent despite the fact that Italy had recognized Kosovo, which is just one aspect of the two countries’ relations. He added that Italy supports Serbia on the path to Europe, the economic cooperation is expanding at a constant rate and that he is in favour of advancing parliamentary cooperation.

The Chairperson of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs of the Italian Parliament’s Chamber of Deputies Marta Grande emphasized her country’s active support of the Western Balkan countries’ European path opining that the level of public support for EU accession is an issue concerning both the candidate countries and the EU itself which needs to change.

The officials exchanged views on the EU accession criteria for new members and respect for what has been done in terms of the European path, migrant crisis and other challenges the EU is facing today. The Chairperson of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs of the Italian Parliament’s Chamber of Deputies invited the Serbian colleagues to the convention of representatives of all the assemblies of the Western Balkan countries next year in Italy.
