Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Borko Stefanovic Meets with Bulgarian Ambassador to Serbia

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Borko Stefanovic met today with the Bulgarian Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Petko Doykov who took the opportunity to congratulate him on being elected Committee Chairman and National Assembly Deputy Speaker.

The Ambassador went on to discuss with the Committee Chairman the coming parliamentary elections in Bulgaria in early October and the formation of Serbian Government.

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Borko Stefanovic thanked the Ambassador for the initiative to meet and the opportunity to discuss the very challenging situation in Europe. He said that EU accession is Serbia’s top foreign policy goal and that he would use his right to submit an initiative at the level of the Committee to confirm the course of Serbia’s foreign policy and assess the degree of its conformity with the goals of the European Union. Stefanovic stressed that the difficult situation in Kosovo-Metohija has to be resolved peacefully, seeking the best solution for the population living in the area, adding that Serbia formally recognising Kosovo-Metohija, must not be the condition for EU accession.

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee also said that he supports the “Open Balkans” initiative which could be very useful for the Western Balkan countries in light of the Ukraine crisis reverberating across Europe.

The Ambassador said that every country should defend its own interests and seek the best solutions, but be able to identify priorities in crisis situations as well. He restated that Bulgaria strongly supports Serbia’s European integration process and that, when it comes to common interests, the two countries should cooperate and act at the international level.

The officials agreed that, when the situation allows, they would initiate a reciprocal parliamentary visit to allow the parliamentarians to make contacts and develop cooperation.
