European Integration Committee Delegation Takes Part in Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of EU Member States

A delegation of the European Integration Committee, comprising Biljana Pantic Pilja and Dr Ivan Bauer, took part in the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of EU Member States – COSAC, held on 1 and 2 December 2014 in Rome, as part of the parliamentary dimension of the Italian Presidency of the European Union. In addition to 200 parliamentarians from all EU member states, the meeting was also attended by representatives of EU candidate states.

The meeting was opened by Pietro Grasso, President of the Italian Senate, who presented the Italian Presidency of the European Union opining that the parliamentary dimension of the Italian Presidency, which this very conference will bring to a close, has been successful. In the introductory part, the parliamentarians were also addressed by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi who criticised the current economic and social situation in the member states saying that the reforms need to be expedited both at the level of the EU and its individual member states.

The Conference tackled the role of European institutions and national parliaments, Europe 2020 Strategy with a special focus on employment growth and competitiveness, EU’s global role and projection of its policies in the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe, as well as the democratic control of European agencies.

The representatives of the European Integration Committee thanked Italy for the efforts it expended toward EU enlargement during its Presidency, with a special thanks to the Italian Senate and the Chairman of the Senate EU Policies Committee Vannino Chiti. Namely, the Italian Senate had passed a resolution relating to Serbia’s EU accession, asking the European Union to speed up the process. They informed the assembly on the preparations for the opening of certain negotiations chapters, saying that Serbia was ready to open chapter 32 – financial control. Opening this chapter is important for both Serbia as a state and its citizens because it would signify tangible progress after the opening of negotiations in January 2014. The Government and the National Assembly have worked long and hard to make sure the chapter is opened by the end of 2014. Finally, they thanked all the participants for the support they have shown for Serbia’s European perspective.
