Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Chairman Attends Privrednik’s 7th Congress in Zagreb

Miodrag Linta, Chairman of the Serbian Assembly’s Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, attended the 7th Congress of Privrednik’s scholars and Serbian youth on Saturday, 15 December 2018, at the Serbian Orthodox Grammar School in Zagreb.

Addressing Privrednik’s former and current scholars and guests from Croatia and the region, among other things Linta said that it is Serbia’s duty and privilege to take care of Serbs living outside of Serbia and help them preserve their national and cultural identity. He said that, at the proposal of President Vucic, the Serbian Government had on Wednesday 12 December decided to grant Privrednik sufficient funds to cover 25 scholarships for Serbian students in 2019. Linta went on to say that following President Vucic’s visit to Croatia, the Serbian Government had granted funds for 20 scholarships in 2018.

Having awarded the new scholarships, Linta attended a panel discussion on Youth between “us” and “them”. He opposed the provocative argument of one of the participants, Marija Selak of the Zagreb Faculty of Philosophy, who claimed that Serbia, the Yugoslav Armed Forces and Serbs from Krajina perpetrated an act of aggression against Croatia. Linta clearly said that the thesis about the character of the 1990s war is absolutely wrong and that there is ample proof that Tudjman’s regime perpetrated acts of aggression against Yugoslavia, the Yugoslav Armed Forces and Serbs in Croatia. He said that the Croat people has still not faced up to its Ustasha past as is evident for many examples, adding to that the disheartening fact that according to the research of the Institute of Social Sciences in Zagreb, 71% of high-school students in Croatia have a positive opinion of the infamous NDH (Independent State of Croatia).

The Congress was also attended by Metropolitan Porfirije of Zagreb-Ljubljana, member of Croatia’s Parliament from the ranks of SDSS Boris Milosevic and many others.

A day earlier, on 14 December 2018, the Chairman of the on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Miodrag Linta, visited Gerasim, Bishop of Gornji Karlovac in his bishop’s palace in Karlovac.

On the occasion they talked about the difficult position of the remaining Serbs in the diocese and the construction of the Orthodox Church in Vrginmost, the funds for which were secured by the Serbian Government following President Vucic’s visit to the area.

They also talked about repairing Orthodox monuments in other parts of the diocese and protecting the agricultural land of exiled Serbs and other affected citizens living outside of Croatia.

Linta suggested to Bishop Gerasim that the church should have a more active role in the preservation of Serbian land, which the Bishop agreed with. Linta said that only the Serbian Orthodox Church can protect the land of Serbs exiled from Croatia.

“Since the end of the war in 1995 to date Croatia has seized more than 800 thousand agricultural plots from the citizens of Serbian nationality”, said Linta adding that every exiled Serb should be given legal assistance to reclaim their property.

“If the Serbs cannot work the land because they live outside of Croatia, they should be allowed to grant its usage for a limited period to the Serbian Orthodox Church”, said Linta. He said that he would propose the same to the other bishops whose dioceses are in Croatia.
