23rd Sitting of the Committee on Labour, Social Issues, Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction

At the sitting held on 25 May 2015, the members of the Committee on Labour, Social Issues, Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction discussed launching an initiative with the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs to sign an agreement between the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Montenegro on free movement of labour force following the Nordic Model of Cooperation, in accordance with the Igman Initiative.

Committee Chairperson Dr Vesna Rakonjac informed the Committee members about the meeting in Podgorica, organised at the initiative of the representatives of the non-governmental sector – the Igman Initiative, to discuss the signing of a bilateral agreement between Serbia and Montenegro. She said that the purpose of the bilateral agreement is to enable Serbian citizens to take up seasonal, temporary and occasional jobs in Montenegro, saying that this would protect them and make them eligible for social, health and pension insurance.

The Committee members unanimously decided to send an initiative to the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs to launch the appropriate proceedings to draft an agreement between the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Montenegro.

The Committee Chairperson then went on to invite the Committee members to hold a meeting with UNHCR representatives to address the problem asylum-seekers in transit through Serbia, saying that up to 50,000 asylum-seekers are expected to pass through Serbia this year.

The sitting was chaired by Dr Vesna Rakonjac, Committee Chairperson.
