22nd Economic Forum Held in Poland

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and member of the European Integration Committee, Gordana Comic took part in the 22nd Economic Forum, organised by the Warsaw Institute for Eastern Studies and held in Krynica, Poland, from 4 to 6 September 2012.

On the panel on “Should EU Enlargement Continue?", discussing the potential for further EU expansion, Deputy Speaker Comic stated that about 50% of the Serbian population and 95% of the parties at the National Assembly endorse the European integration process. She stressed that the diversity of the European Union should be rounded up by adding Serbia and called upon the EU politicians and society to be rational and accept the Western Balkan countries into their midst.

At the final plenary session titled “Crisis of Democracy – In Search of Leadership”, Deputy Speaker Comic said that democracy is complicated, but it is also the best system through which the EU will overcome the crisis. She added that we should not ask who is to blame, but rather seek a solution to the crisis. She said that politicians have to take responsibility for the decisions they make today and which will have implications for future generations, emphasising the importance and role of the parliament and parliamentarians in the process.

Taking part in the conference titled “Europe of the Carpathians", held parallel with the Economic Forum and organised by the Polish Sejm, Deputy Speaker Comic spoke on the panel on “Sustainable development of the Carpathians – the role of the parliament”, stressing that the signatories of the Carpathian Convention, Serbia among them, should connect and work on making the Carpathians visible on the EU regional map not only by their folklore, but also by their cultural, tourist and economic projects, as well as better use of the Danube’s potential.

The 22nd Economic Forum comprised more than 500 representatives of parliaments, governments, chambers of commerce, EU institutions and businessmen who discussed the role of the state in the economy, strategies of addressing the global economic crisis, the EU’s new role in the further expansion of the EU, role of the media in light of globalization, crisis of democracy, sustainable development and vision of leadership for the 21st century on more than 140 panels.

In addition to Deputy Speaker Gordana Comic, MP Bozidar Djelic also took part in the Forum and spoke at the plenary session on “The Post-communist Countries – Between Dreams and Reality”.
