16th Sitting of the Subcommittee for Monitoring the Agricultural Situation in the Marginal - Most Undeveloped Areas in the Republic of Serbia

At the sitting held on 7 June, the members of the Subcommittee for Monitoring the Agricultural Situation in the Marginal - Most Undeveloped Areas in the Republic of Serbia discussed poultry farming in the least developed municipalities.

Subcommittee Chairman Milija Miletic said that poultry farming offers big potentials for the undeveloped areas seeing how relatively low investments and physical labour can yield sufficient livelihood for a family. He added that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection and its programme of subsidies have made it possible for young people to take up poultry farming.

Velimir Stanojevic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, informed the Subcommittee members that poultry production has in the last ten years been on a slight rise and that according to the 2012 census about 400,000 households i.e. 65% of the farming households in Serbia deal in poultry farming. He said that poultry farming deserves more attention because it can yield considerable production with low investment. Stanojevic said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection has secured stimulation packages for the purchase of hens, for both regular and organic production. Speaking of investments for henhouse construction and equipment, Stanojevic said that the Ministry has for the first time this year secured funds and refunds, in the amount of 50%, for poultry farms.

Nebojsa Zlatkovic, professor of the College of Agriculture –and Food Technology in Prokuplje, said that investment into poultry farming can be productive since a farm needs at least 500 hens to yield a 2500 EUR yearly i.e. 200 EUR monthly income. He said that the Serbian Government should continue with projects of this kind and with the subsidies, adding that educating small farmers how to be more efficient and productive is also essential.

Milija Miletic concluded that the Serbian Government should continue with its policy and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection should continue funding this agricultural branch. It is also important to regulate the assistance to marginal and underdeveloped areas through a legislative framework as soon as possible.

The sitting was chaired by Subcommittee Chairman Milija Miletic, and attended by Subcommittee members Zarko Bogatinovic and Dalibor Radicevic.
